EARLY morning dustmen had extra work today after vandals rampaged through Ipswich town centre.

Overnight, the Foundation Street and Tacket Street area was left cluttered by litter and signs of vandalism.

Recycling bins had been turned upside down and emptied on the pavements, plants were pulled out of containers and hurled across the road and plastic bags of rubbish left for collection by businesses were ripped open.

Smashed glass was also left behind by the offenders.

Ipswich Borough Council's dustmen were out clearing up the mess at around 7.30am.

A council spokesman said: “We were out clearing this up as soon as we possibly could.

“We find this sort of mindless vandalism quite sickening, as a lot of time and money goes into making the town centre as attractive as we can.”

Suffolk police said it did not receive any reports about the vandalism, but would only have a record if complaints were made and officers attended.
