HE led the England rugby team to World Cup glory, but Lawrence Dallaglio's latest challenge could be creating a new beer.

The former England captain, who was the only England player to play every minute of the country's successful 2003 World Cup campaign, is in Bury St Edmunds today to learn about the fine art of ale making.

Mr Dallaglio, who is passionate about beer, was given a tutored tasting session with Greene King's head brewer John Bexon. The meeting could lead to Mr Dallaglio playing an active role in coming up with the new beer.

He told how beer played a crucial role in rugby.

“If you win then you have a couple of beers to celebrate and, if you lose, then you drown you sorrows over a couple of pints as part of the match post-mortem,” he said.

He told how he had been to Bury a few times in the past and had always enjoyed his visits.

Although he admitted his knowledge of brewing was limited, Mr Dallaglio said he was looking forward to learning and to creating a new beer.
