A RECORD turnout at this year's Woodbridge 10km race will help boost the coffers of six worthy causes.

Organised by the Woodbridge Shufflers running team, the event attracts hundreds of people from across Suffolk and yesterday's meeting was no exception.

Nearly 500 men and women of various ages and abilities took part in the race proper and 150 children enjoyed a fun run, raising more than a thousand pounds for charity.

The Red Cross, St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich, Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund, Ipswich Hospital Radio, the Muscular Dystrophy Society and Children with Leukaemia will each receive more than £200.

Dick Dolan, who helped organise the event, was very pleased with the turnout although he was unhappy that the fun run could not cater for more children.

"It all went very well but we were actually oversubscribed in the fun run and more children wanted to take part than we could allow," he said.

"This concerned us because sadly we had disappointed kids and parents. I am sure that we can accommodate more people but we will need to sit down and discuss the situation with the police for next year.

"We have a limited capacity but I think its great that so many kids want to take part."

Mr Dolan was particularly impressed with the many over 60 runners who joined in, with one man over 70-years-old even completing the race.

He said: "Anyone of that age that can complete the demanding, hilly course deserves to be congratulated."
