A crossing by a busy primary school is being upgraded to improve the safety of children walking to school.
New street lighting and a wider footpath are also being put in at St Helen’s Primary School in Ipswich, with the work taking place during the summer holidays to limit disruption to school traffic.
The footpath in Woodbridge Road, where the school is based, will also be resurfaced, while underground detectors will be put in to extend the amount of time children have to walk across the road at the new puffin crossing.
Suffolk Highways, which is managing the project, said the works will continue for four weeks in total to complete.
A lane closure is in place for the first three weeks and then for the final fourth week there will be an overnight full road closure to reline and place road studs.
Diversions will be in place.
In previous years parents have said to be scared of crossing the road due to regular near-misses involving cars driving fast along Woodbridge Road.
They later won an eight-month battle to have the speed limit in a section of Woodbridge Road reduced from 30mph to 20mph.
