New Ipswich MP Sandy Martin has travelled to London to sign in as the town’s new representative at Westminster.

He joined commuters on an early train to the capital before heading to the House of Commons to formally sign in – he had been advised by the Labour whips that there would be a major scrum to sign in on Monday and it would be fine to arrive early the next day.

Mr Martin spent Monday in a series of meetings in Ipswich and is now getting to know his new workplace – and is trying to sort out office accommodation in the Palace of Westminster.

While his first day in London will be largely administrative, it will also be an opportunity for him to meet his new colleagues and meet the party whips.

He was seen off from Ipswich station by supporters who got up to see him off on the 6.44am train. He is likely to be joining the commuters regularly, although he has arranged a flat in London.
