A SCHOOLGIRL today denied stealing cigarettes and money from a 62-year-old Ipswich man accused of raping her.

The girl told a jury at Ipswich Crown Court that she was telling the truth when she said that Bartholomew Hoey had tried to bribe her by giving her cigarettes and money.

She denied a suggestion from Hoey's defence barrister David Richards that she had in fact stolen from Hoey.

Hoey of Nacton Road, Ipswich, has denied 10 offences of indecent assault, one offence of indecency with a child and one offence of rape.

It has been alleged that Hoey indecently assaulted two school girls.

It has been claimed by Julian Christopher, prosecuting, that some of the offences happened in a pigeon loft in Hoey's garden.

The girls have claimed that Hoey indecently touched their breasts and genital areas and on one occasion had pushed one of the girls down and raped her.

On another occasion he had allegedly made one of the girls put her hand down his trousers and touch him.

Giving evidence today the girl broke down in tears during questioning by Mr Richards about the allegations she had made against Hoey.

She told the court that she enjoyed watching soap operas such as Coronation Street and EastEnders on television but denied that conversations she told police she had with Hoey had come from a soap opera.

The girl admitted that in the past the other girl who had made allegations against Hoey had got her into trouble.

She agreed that last summer she and the other girl had been warned by police after a violent incident in Ipswich.

The trial continues.
