SHOPPERS watched in amazement as a scruffy, unshaven man grabbed cash from an open till at a Felixstowe supermarket and ran off.

Police today appealed for help to catch the man, who left the Safeway store by a side door, jumped into a car and drove away.

Officers said the man had not been armed, did not threaten staff and no-one was hurt in the incident, which happened just before 8pm yesterday.

The man – who got away with a quantity of cash – snatched the takings in the till when the cash drawer was opened by the check-out worker to get change for another customer who was being served.

Police were called and interviewed members of the staff and customers who were present at the time, and today issued a description of a man they want to question in connection with the theft.

He is white, about 5ft 10in to 6ft tall, in his late 20s or early 30s. He was wearing a grey baseball cap and grey jumper.

Witnesses described him as "very scruffy" looking and had not shaved for a while. He had acne, an ear-ring in his left ear and is believed to have brown hair.

When he left the store in Grange Farm Avenue, he made off in a small blue car parked in the car park.

Anyone who may have seen the man in the shop or making his getaway, or recognises his description, is asked to contact Felixstowe CID on 01473 613500.
