THE SEARCH for the successor to the late Jamie Cann began in earnest today, as the Labour Party announced details of how they will find a new Ipswich MP.

THE SEARCH for the successor to the late Jamie Cann began in earnest today, as the Labour Party announced details of how they will find a new Ipswich MP.

But Bob Blizzard, MP for Waveney and Labour's only current Member of Parliament said Mr Cann, who died on October 15, would be a hard act to follow.

He said: "The best kind of memorial to Jamie is to re-elect a Labour candidate to the seat.

"He will be a hard act to follow but we want to ensure that Ipswich soon has a suitable person to raise the town's problems and issues."

All members of the Ipswich Labour Party will have the chance to vote to choose Labour's regional candidate and it is hoped to have a Labour candidate in place in by Thursday, November 1.

Although the actual date of the by-election is not known, it is hoped that it could happen before Christmas.

Chris Lane, Labour press officer said: "There is a danger that if the by-election is not called soon that the parliamentary timetable may mean that is not held until mid-January.

"We believe that Ipswich needs a new MP as soon as possible for a whole number of reasons but the actual decision will be taken by parliament"

Potential Labour candidates have been invited to put themselves forward by contacting regional director Peter Watt at their regional office.

Mr Watt said that Mr Cann will be a difficult man to replace.

He said: "Many people in Ipswich have told us that Jamie was above all a worker for Ipswich residents. Ipswich is an important lively town and has a very diverse community.

"An effective, strong MP is a vital part of Ipswich, as a voice for the interests of the town and of individuals living here. We are sure that Ipswich must have an MP to speak for it as soon as is practically possible."
