First-look pictures from the new series show the former St Joseph’s College pupil in a striking red suit, paired with shiny white red-laced boots.

The latest series of the adventure game show, due to air next month, sees teams of five contestants navigating the Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Future zones while racking up as many crystals as possible.

They must win them in the Crystal Dome for the final showdown.

Ayoade has been a favourite for the roles of Bake Off host and the thirteenth Doctor Who over the past year.

The 40-year-old, who was a member of the creative writing club while he studied at St Joseph’s College in Ipswich, has scooped a number of awards for his portrayal of Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd and Dean Learner in Darkplace.

• The 20-episode series is due to air on Channel 4 next month.
