The magical worlds of vintage children's television favourites The Clangers and Bagpuss are being brought to life this summer at Ipswich Art Gallery.

Both children and adults can take part in a range of activities at the exhibition – including how speak Clanger – until October 28.

Originally created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, the characters are on tour from their usual home at the V&A Museum of Childhood.

They have been delighting those who grew up watching them – and entertaining a new generation of children currently enjoying The Clangers on CBeebies.

As well as telling the story of Bagpuss and The Clangers, the exhibition goes behind the scenes of some of their other creations including Pogles Wood, Noggin the Nog and Ivor the Engine.

Ipswich mayor Sarah Barber said: “The warm nostalgia many of us hold for these iconic TV characters is something to celebrate and indulge in.

“The skills that Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin put into creating these characters and programmes should be cherished, too, and they are openly celebrated in this exhibition.

“They are important traits for us to nurture in our children as they grow up in our changing world.”

• The Ipswich Art Gallery is in High Street.
