An Ipswich couple were showered with bubbles of a different kind at St Elizabeth Hospice's Bubble Rush event as a lovestruck runner got down on one knee.

Delighted friends and family members looked on as Co-op workers Daniel West and Becky Burch got engaged at the annual race as they crossed the finish line on Sunday afternoon.

Recalling the “breathtaking” moment his girlfriend of nearly a year said yes to his marriage proposal, Daniel – a father-of-one from Ipswich – said he was very nervous but could not have picked a better moment.

The 25-year-old said: “I was extremely nervous and had been pacing all day before. “We’re both big supporters of the hospice and I knew all my family and Becky’s family were going to be there watching.

“Because I knew they were going to be there I wanted to make it special so waited until Becky crossed the finish line and got down on one knee.

“I was worried at first that she might have seen the ring as my dad was keeping it safe but it was a surprise after all.”

The pair, who met in October last year, celebrated their engagement with a bottle of fizz – most of which was sprayed over them by excited onlookers.

Daniel added: “I’d wanted to propose to Becky for a long while and this just felt like the perfect moment to do it, when we were both surrounded by family.

“There is no-one else like her and when she said yes it was just breathtaking, I don’t really know how else to describe it, but it’s an amazing feeling.”

Becky, who is 23, said she is still in shock.

She said: “I was shaking and if I’m honest I’m still shocked about the whole thing now.

“I just wasn’t expecting it at all – but of course I said yes!

“It was really nice to have all of our families around because they were able to get straight in and celebrate everything with us.

“It was perfect and I’m so happy, we had a brilliant day fundraising and somehow I managed to come home with a fiancé and a ring on my finger.

“We’re so happy and we’d like to thank the hospice for giving us a brilliant time.”

It is hoped that this year’s Bubble Rush event, hosted in Christchurch Park, will collect a record £35,000 for the Ipswich based hospice.

More than 1,000 people took part in the five kilometre dash.
