IPSWICH'S onslaught against the seedy world of street prostitution is today continuing to lead to arrests, The Evening Star can reveal.

More than 40 men have been seized by officers leading the crackdown on kerb crawling and soliciting women in the town's red-light district since March 6.

Five arrests have been made in the last week alone - two of men caught kerb crawling and three of men who were caught in the act and cautioned for outraging public decency.

Suffolk police today said that since March 6, 29 arrests had been made for kerb crawling, eight for outraging public decency and a further six men had been arrested for soliciting women.

The police crackdown is a key pillar in the town's new prostitution strategy, which aims to help women out of the destructive street sex trade while clamping down on the men who create a demand for street sex.

Information for the arrests up until May 21 - the latest available - showed that 12 of the arrested men were from Ipswich, nine were from other areas of Suffolk, six were from Essex, mainly north Essex, four were from Cambridgeshire and four were from outside East Anglia.

The vast majority of those arrested were given a caution because it was their first offence.
