Police would only confirm that a 32-year-old Dewsbury woman had been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, but sources in the Yorkshire town said this was Karen Matthews.
Her arrest came at the end of a day when the man accused of allegedly kidnapping nine-year-old Shannon was taken to hospital after apparently slitting his wrists while on remand in Leeds prison.
Shannon's stepfather Craig Meehan is currently on remand in prison after being accused of possessing indecent images of children, and his mother and sister have been arrested and questioned by police on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and assisting an offender.
They were released on bail on Friday.
