Shock rise in inflation

INFLATION rose by its fastest rate for almost six years last month.

INFLATION rose by its fastest rate for almost six years last month.

The 0.5% rise in the Consumer Prices Index to three per cent comes on the back of hikes in the cost of gas and electricity bills, food prices and increases in tax on alcohol and tobacco.

City economists had forecast a rise of no more than 2.6%.
