The brazen raid took place in front of hundreds of Christmas shoppers outside WH Smith on December 22 - one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Two men were involved in the robbery, which is believed to have been an opportunistic operation.

One elbowed the guard in the face and snatched the money box before the pair fled along Providence Street and into Crown Street.

A police spokesman confirmed: “Enquiries are ongoing to trace the two offenders.

“Anyone who may have information as to who was responsible should contact police.”

The security guard, who works for G4S Cash Services (UK), was uninjured in the robbery, although he was left shaken.

The incident took place at around 4.40pm and forced WH Smith to close for the remainder of the day.

The area around the store was cordoned off for an hour while scenes of crime officers scoured the scene.
