EXCITED shoppers queued outside Ipswich's O2 shop to snap up the new Apple iPhone.

About 20 people waited in the cold last night before the much-hyped mobile went on sale for £269 at 6.02pm in Tavern Street.

The sleek black device works as a mobile phone but can also be used as a widescreen iPod and for surfing the internet.

The unusual launch time was chosen because the iPhone is available on O2 contracts only.

O2 shop staff handed out bottles of water and muffins to sustain those in the queue.

Ricardo Policarpo, 16, from Chantry, Ipswich, stood outside the store for 45 minutes.

He said he wasn't sure how much it cost but was willing to buy it whatever the price.

“It's pretty advanced for a mobile or i-pod.”

Shawn Wootton, 21, of London Road, said he had wanted it for some time.

“I saw it when I was in America as well as on the internet and I thought I'd like to get one. Everyone is here because of the hype.”
