A Suffolk student studying sports coaching at university has travelled to Africa to help teach cricket and raise awareness of HIV and aids.
Former One sixth form student Mollie Fitzgerald, 20, of Shotley Gate, is one of five students at Leeds Trinity University carrying out the volunteering project in Rwanda with charity Cricket Without Boundaries.
They will train PE teachers how to integrate sports coaching with HIV and AIDS awareness messages, and deliver cricket sessions at schools until June 12. The students flew out today.
Miss Fitzgerald, a secondary physical education and sports coaching student, said: “I’m really looking forward to visiting Africa for the first time and to coach lots of different children and people in a different environment that is completely out of my comfort zone.
Although I won’t bring any great cricket skills, as I coach netball or basketball currently, I’ll always be enthusiastic and smiling.
“It’s a great opportunity to expand my skills and improve my coaching experience. It is something that will help me to be a better PE teacher and sport coach, and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I’m excited to make a difference to the children’s lives and spread awareness of important health messages.”
