SPURRED on by the memory of her grandmother, Lisa Barnard is preparing to run through the streets of the capital to raise funds for two good causes.

The 39-year-old, of Shotley Gate, will tackle the London Marathon next month to help Age UK and YouthNet set up a new service where young volunteers help isolated older people get online.

This will be Mrs Barnard’s first ever race and, with her 40th birthday just around the corner, she believes it will be a great way to remember it.

She added: “What has really driven me to run the 26.2 mile challenge is my nan who passed away last year at the amazing age of 98.

“Although she had lots of support from her family to enable her to stay independent, there are many older people who are not as lucky and are feeling lonely and isolated, which saddens me a lot.

“Old age comes to us all and I believe that older people should be treated with dignity.

“I’m really passionate about raising money for Age UK and YouthNet to help them with their vital work for those less fortunate than my nan.”

The two charities hope the new initiative will help young people to develop new skills and provide older people with new ways to keep in touch with family and friends.

Emma Thomas, CEO at YouthNet said: “Lisa is playing her part in helping tackle isolation across generations, giving young people the opportunity to contribute to society by sharing their passion and understanding of the digital world with older people.

“We’re thrilled that Lisa has decided to run for us and we can’t wait to be there on race day, willing her to the finish line.”
