Shotley siege ends peacefully

A 43-year-old man from the Shotley area was today in custody after police ended an 11 hour siege in the village without any injuries.

Shortly before 7pm on Saturday the incident ended peacefully as the unarmed man was lead away.

He was removed from the scene and taken to Ipswich police station in a van where he remains in custody.

Police had been alerted to the house in Blake Avenue, Shotley Gate, after a reports that a man was threatening to harm himself.

Three people, the man's partner and two children, left the house about 15 minutes after the incident started yesterday morning.

Residents in the normally quiet village has been waiting outside their houses for much of the afternoon as police cordoned off the immediate area surrounding the house.

The officer in charge of the incident Supt Kevin Sloane said: "We are pleased that this situation has been resolved without injury and we would like to than the residents of Shotley for their co-operation and patience during this protracted incident".
