Cheered on by Union Jack flag-waving spectators, schoolchildren sang favourite wartime songs at an Ipswich town centre cafe to commemorate the D-Day landings today.
Dozens of customers turned up to St Lawrence’s Cafe in Dial Lane to listen to the children from Sidegate Primary School.
The youngsters drew inspiration from wartime sweetheart Vera Lynn as they sang a collection of songs from the 1940s.
The cafe is run by social enterprise Realise Futures. Its catering manager Corinne Barker said: “Songs that won the war will be playing all week and we thank the children for singing at the cafe. Danny Howden, the performing arts leader at Sidegate Primary School, planned and taught the songs and his enthusiasm has been amazing.”
The afternoon teas at the cafe this week include finger sandwiches with traditional fillings from the war period, such as cornbeef and spam, an authentic Victory cake, a no-bake chocolate cake, and scones with ‘mock cream’ made from a wartime recipe.
