THUNDER may have echoed in the sky but that did not put off the people of Capel St Mary as they celebrated the Queen's golden jubilee.

The day began yesterday at 12 noon when there was an official opening of their new village sign.

Stalls lined the shopping parade and a bouncy castle nestled in the trees keeping the youngsters happy.

Chairman of the Parish Council, Gerald White said the day had been a real success.

"It has gone very well and it has been a good community day," he said.

Edwina Cox, who was helping to run the gardening club stall, said the area had been heaving before they even started.

"By 11.50am the place was full and the stalls have all sold so well," she said.

Residents are also sending the Queen a card signed by all the people who joined in the successful day with congratulations for her 50-year reign.
