The rogue Ipswich road sign.

Only weeks after they were switched on, the new electronic signs at entrances to Ipswich have prompted irritation for many motorists.

Their regular warnings about potentially heavy traffic days ahead when Ipswich Town have a home match have irritated some – and earlier this week their message left some scratching their heads when they warned about a match on “Sat 3rd Nov, Delays expected 7-10.30pm.”

This photo was sent in to the Star by regular reader Gwen Adams on Tuesday night, apparently referring to that night’s match with Bolton at Portman Road.

A spokeswoman from Suffolk County Council said: “The Variable Message Signs inform road users of planned and unplanned events that are likely to cause significant disruption to traffic flows.

“They are also used proactively; giving information about planned events and they display messages in line with national road safety campaigns.

“Unfortunately on this occasion, a user error was made on the information board with a mention of Saturday when it was a Tuesday. We have resolved the issue.”
