Double death in Ipswich leaves community in shock

PUBLISHED: 20:46 06 August 2018 | UPDATED: 21:45 06 August 2018

Community leaders have reacted with shock to the two deaths in Siloam Place, describing the incident as "very worrying".

As news of the tragedy emerged, councillors and the town’s MP voiced their shock and offered their support to the community.

Councillor Elizabeth Harsant, whose Holywells ward includes Siloam Place, sent her condolences to the families of those affected.

“I can’t think of anything worse,” she said.

She said people were likely to feel “quite nervous” about the latest incident given the fact it is not the first time there has been a serious incident at Siloam Place.

In November 2016 an 18-year-old was shot in the shoulder in what was believed to be a drug-related incident.

Mrs Harsant said: “It’s quite a quiet area. People just get on with their lives - they’re busy people.

“I certainly do send my deepest condolences and hope we will soon have more information.”

Once the police have completed their immediate investigations at the scene, she said there needed to be a series of police patrols to reassure residents in the area following the incident.

Councillor Jan Parry, who also represents the Holywells ward, said it was worrying to hear what had happened.

She said: “It is shocking and we are very aware of the impact it will have on the people living around that area.

“It is very worrying.

“We will look to support the local residents as soon as we get more information on the incident.

“We are a little in the dark at the moment on what has happened.

“We do have regular meetings in the community so will hope to have some more information on how we can help soon.

“It is certainly worrying for the community.”

Ipswich MP Sandy Martin said: “Any death is a tragedy but it’s far too early to say, until we know more, about how these deaths have occurred.

“We have no idea how and why this has happened.

“If it is a domestic incident, it could happen anywhere.”
