A £40,000 skate park facility under construction in Haughley has been vandalised by the very people it is intended to benefit, according to a man behind the scheme.

The facility, which is currently under construction on Haughley Playing Field, was targeted hooligans between August 1 and 2.

The offenders climbed onto the roof of a shelter, built to form a meeting area alongside the skate park, to pierce the roofing felt and damage a number of panels.

Colin Hart, of the playing field committee, said: "We try to improve the facilities in the village and we try to involve the community in the decisions, but it seems the very people this facility was intended for have decided to damage it.

"Effectively, they are damaging property that belongs to them. It's very disappointing."

The building of the shelter is part of an ongoing project supported by Suffolk police, Haughley Youth Club, neighbourhood watch and the parish council.

Money towards its cost has been provided by Mid Suffolk district council, the National Playing Fields Association and Suffolk county council.

The park is currently awaiting delivery of skate boarding equipment, including ramps and a half pipe.

Paving around the area is close to completion and the facility should be officially opened within the next few weeks.
