A mobile skatepark could be set up during school holidays in Kesgrave next year – more than 15 years after petitions for a skating area began.

Kesgrave Town Council has announced its intention to bring out its mothballed mobile skate ramps at a venue to be confirmed.

But as part of the project existing skaters aged 18 and above are being asked to volunteer their time to become skate park instructors.

In particular those who already skate, those who are looking to get into sport or activity coaching and those looking to boost their CV are being urged to sign up, where they will gain a nationally-recognised Skate Park Instructor Award, as well as safeguarding and first aid training.

The volunteers will then be expected to volunteer some time during the school holidays to supervise and instruct youngsters looking to get into skating during sessions laid on during school holidays.

A Kesgrave Town Council spokeswoman said: “It will help young people looking to get into teaching, and if you want to get into skateboarding you currently have to get to Woodbridge or Ipswich.

“The idea is we have got to begin funding for it, and if it happens it will be for the whitsun holiday and we will either get a regular session going or do it each holiday.”

The issue of a skatepark in Kesgrave has been a long-running one which started more than 15 years ago when a number of high school pupils started a petition.

But it is understood difficulty finding an area far enough from houses has been an issue in previous years.

The town council spokeswoman added: “We would like to see it [mobile equipment] used and we will learn from that just how popular it is in the town.”
