Skipper baldly goes . . . .

SPEEDWAY rider Chris Louis swapped his crash helmet for a woolly hat - as he adjusted to the cold draft he suddenly felt on his head.

His prediction that the Ipswich Evening Star/Woodward's Witches would finish in the top three of the Sky Sports Elite League this season had proved wrong and he was paying the consequences.

After boasting of how well he believed his team would perform, he had proclaimed that if his prediction did not come true, he would willingly go bald.

During the interval at the Witches' final home match of the season last night against Wolverhampton, Louis stayed true to his word in front of the crowd, and kissed goodbye to his hair.

Toni Clouting, from Tonic Hairdressers, took the clippers to the Witches skipper's barnet and shaved it off.

He quickly replaced his hair with a woolly hat in an effort to keep the cold off and the warmth in.

He said: "I could've done with us finishing third but it is all for charity.

"I'm just feeling a little bit cold."

Louis decided that if he was going to lose his hair he would do it for a worthwhile cause and last night's head shave was held in aid of Ipswich Children's Hospice.

A collection was also held for the charity at Saturday's speedway cup final at Foxhall Stadium against Peterborough.

The Hospice provides care for children and their families at home and at the hospice. It is currently supporting 60 families, ten of which are bereaved.

It also provides overnight respite care, day care, an after school club and a youth club once a month.
