Slimmers’ baby joy against the odds

WALDRINGFIELD: Two years ago they faced the devastating news they could not have another baby.

But now after losing more than 11 stone between them delighted couple Vicky Marsh and Andy Gent welcomed their third child, baby Jocasta on Boxing Day.

The Waldringfield couple shed their weight thanks to the healthy eating plan and weekly Slimming World classes and have now realised their dream of adding to their family.

At his heaviest 46-year-old Mr Gent weighed 29 stone 13lb causing him to struggle with everyday life. Dangerously overweight he was offered a gastric bypass but only if he lost eight stone, to give him a chance of surviving the drastic procedure.

After five years of trying to have a baby Miss Marsh, 36, was offered IVF treatment but on the proviso she reduced her body-mass-index from 36 to a healthier 30.

But the determined couple embraced a new healthier lifestyle, shedding the pounds. Mr Gent avoid the need for surgery and Miss Marsh fell pregnant naturally.

Miss Marsh said: “It just shows how important it is to lose weight, healthy eating and some determination helped us to conceive Jocasta.

“I carried on going throughout my pregnancy, it helped keep me in shape and I managed to lose one stone in two weeks after her birth. We will both keep going, losing the weight has given us a new lease of life.

“It was just amazing having her, after five years of trying I can’t really believe she is here and ours. She is a very special little girl.”

Baby Jocasta arrived three days late on Boxing Day and to celebrate her arrival the couple’s Slimming World group, run by consultant Gail Murton at Kesgrave Community Centre arranged a guess the weight of the baby competition.

The money raised, 42.00 was donated by the group to Meningitis UK in memory of Taylor Westley-Smith, from Kesgrave who was nine-months-old when he died of the killer brain bug.

Miss Marsh added: “I have known Taylor’s dad Mark for years and he was such a lovely little boy, it isn’t much money but every little helps.”
