MEETINGS were taking place today with staff at a Felixstowe company which is pulling out of the town and moving its operations to Hampshire.

Management at SchlumbergerSema are hoping many of the 156 employees will decide to move with the firm.

Those that decide not to go with the business, the smart card division of global hi-tech firm Schlumberger, will be given a substantial redundancy package and help in finding new jobs.

Bosses said today that a series of meetings would be held with workers to discuss in detail the options and keep them informed of what was happening.

The consultation with the employees was being arranged with the Graphical, Paper and Media Union.

It has been decided to close the smart card factory in Carr Road and consolidate operations at Fareham, Hampshire, a newer and larger factory. The move will take about six to nine months to complete.

As a result of relocation there will be a "limited overall reduction" of numbers –mainly management and support staff, but it is hoped this will be achieved without compulsory redundancies.

Redundancy packages will include enhanced, minimum double statutory pay, plus additional payments relating to working through the transition period.
