RESIDENTS of parts of Felixstowe were awoken early today by a strong smell of smoke - wafting across the fields from burning straw and manure piles.
Householders complained of being woken by the smell at about 5am but the fire service said it had not been called to any incidents overnight.
It was later discovered that the nuisance was coming from smoking straw and manure on a field off Gulpher Road, behind the golf driving range.
It is not known how the fire started but damp straw can ignite if it heats up from the inside. The north-easterly breeze took the smell over Walton and all of Old Felixstowe.
