TWO men have been jailed for six months for smuggling tobacco through Felixstowe port.
Anthony Carlin, of Trent Road, Grantham, and Michael Creighton, of Paynesholm, Paston near Peterborough, were sentenced at Bury St Edmunds Crown Court yesterday.
Both had pleaded guilty to tobacco smuggling offences involving 150 kilogrammes of tobacco and almost 4,000 cigarettes which were found by Felixstowe customs officers on April 21 in a lorry from a roll-on, roll-off ferry service from Europoort.
The tax dodged on the smuggled smokes was approximately £15,000.
Carlin, 36, had driven the lorry and Creighton, 42, was his passenger.
John Barber, customs spokesman for the eastern region, said: "Anyone who is involved in smuggling in this way risks being prosecuted and jailed when we catch up with them. A sentence of six months in jail will maybe give others who are tempted to smuggle cigarettes and alcohol a few things to think
