Graham Johnson, of Broomfield Common, Sproughton, was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court after being found guilty following a trial.

The 65-year-old was convicted of eight offences including rape.

Among the other charges he was found guilty of were five sex assaults on a child, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

He was also convicted of inciting a child under 13 into sexual activity.

After Johnson was jailed Detective Constable Kerry Bishop, the officer in the case, lauded his victim for her bravery in coming forward and giving evidence against him.

She said the girl disclosed she had been sexually abused by Johnson after he initially began touching her and taking photographs of her.

Det Con Bishop said: “Police searched his home at the time of his arrest and seized items that were examined by specialist officers.

“Officers also managed to recover DNA evidence that supported the girl’s account of what had occurred.”

Johnson continued to deny the offences during his police interviews, but was subsequently charged.

Det Con Bishop added: “The girl involved in this case has shown immense courage and it was her clear account that not only gave powerful evidence against him, but also provided opportunities to gather supporting information to put before the jury.

“We would encourage anyone who has been the victim of such abuse to come forward.

“Help and support is available and, as this case has shown, it may take time but offenders can be brought to justice.”

At Johnson’s sentencing on Friday afternoon Judge Rupert Overbury jailed him for 11-and-a-half years for rape.

He was imprisoned for a further five-and-a-half years for the sex assaults on a child.

The sentences for the remaining two charges were to run concurrently.
