GORDON Brown knew he had to make the speech of his life at the Labour Party conference.
He was brave and forthright - but was he really trying to convince us that all is well in Britain and that the country has made major strides?
Yes, we'd all like to see him “fighting for Britain” but didn't the City's greed and reckless “profit is everything” show happen on his watch, firstly as Chancellor and then as Premier?
And while we are thinking of fighting for excellent causes - shouldn't he give his junior Transport Minister, Chris Mole, MP for Ipswich a nudge about learning to fight?
Mr Mole has been reluctant to come out fighting for serious heart attack care at his own town's hospital, a grave mistake in our view.
So whilst his constituents, in their darkest hours, face harrowing journeys to hospitals in Basildon, Cambridgeshire and Norwich, we see no evidence of a local fightback on this issue from Mr Mole.
You might say he's been rather underground on the issue - and unless he comes out fighting he may pay a high price next spring.
