STEPS are today being taken to remove a group of travellers from grassland near an Ipswich estate.

Several caravans and vehicles moved on to the council-owned land between Nacton Road and the A14 near the Ravenswood development on Wednesday afternoon.

Their arrival prompted concerns from nearby residents who contacted police and the council.

Because trespassing is a civil matter, police are unable to act unless a complaint has been made by the land owner.

However, a spokesman for Ipswich Borough Council today confirmed that proceedings to remove the travellers had begun.

One Ravenswood resident said the spot had been targeted by travellers in the past.

He added: “We had travellers last year on the same land but police and the council moved them on straight away.”
