WALK tall for the press ball!

This is year seven for the Evening Star's press ball raising thousands of pounds to boost the funds of Disability Care Enterprise.

And to make even more money for children in need around the county, we are linking up with the Orwell Walk.

The Orwell Walk is one of the largest sponsored walks in Suffolk and has so far raised more than £1million for charities in the region.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Ipswich East, they are hoping to beat a previous fundraising record of £51,000.

This year people attempting the walk can put their money to the Evening Star's press ball which, in the last seven years, has helped more than 100 youngsters who need that bit of extra help.

The money has been given to DCE, which in turn has bought specialist equipment for children with disabilities to enhance their young lives.

DCE was set up 15 years ago by the father of a child who was left disabled in a terrible accident.

Money from the press ball boosted their modest funding from around £3,000 a year up to around £40,000.

Anyone can take part in the walk, which is 25 miles long along the banks of the beautiful River Orwell.

But if the thought of 25 miles is enough to make your feet ache, walkers can decide to do either four, 11 or 18 miles instead.

A minibus is available at checkpoints to take walkers back to the base.

This year the walk takes place on June 22 and as always starts from Gainsborough Sports Centre in Maryon Road, Ipswich.

Walkers must register prior to taking part. Registration cost £1.50 for adults and £1 for anyone under 18. Registration on the day costs £2.50.

Although everyone is welcome, people are reminded that no dogs are allowed to accompany them on their roam across country.

For a registration form contact Norman Haines on 01473 215333 or Keith Harris at orwell25@pmauk.keme.co.uk or fax 01473 333506.
