A STOWMARKET burglar has been given a final chance to rid himself of drink and drugs.

Sean O'Leary pleaded guilty to committing three burglaries in Clare Close and Fair Crescent, Stowmarket, and in Goodwood Close, Ipswich to fund his cocaine habit.

Ipswich Crown Court heard that on March 22 the 20-year-old, of Lindsey Way, climbed on a conservatory roof and through a bedroom window and stole a DVD player and stereo unit valued at £1,270.

On March 29 in Ipswich he went in through a patio door and stole jewellery, a hi-fi and television set worth £2,070.

Peter Gair, prosecuting, said a neighbour saw a man fitting the defendant's description pushing a wheelie bin with wires protruding from it.

On April 4 O'Leary struck again in his hometown. He climbed through a bedroom window and stole electrical music equipment worth £970.

The court heard that the house owner returned as O'Leary was leaving the property. O'Leary was caught by leaving his fingerprints at the properties.

Mr Gair said O'Leary had a criminal record and had burgled a house in Stowupland Road in 2003.

Neil Macaulay mitigating said: "He says he became in debt for a large sum of money and committed these offences."

He said O'Leary regularly used cocaine at the time of his offending and "suffered from a chaotic lifestyle". Mr Macaulay said his client started misusing drugs when he was 16 but had stopped using heroin.

Judge David Goodin sentenced O'Leary to 51 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months. Judge Goodin said that during the next 18 months O'Leary would have to address his drug problem through rehabilitation and comply with a strict drug treatment and testing order to become drug free.

He warned O'Leary that failure to comply with the orders would result in immediate imprisonment.
