A VOLUNTEER centre in Stowmarket has sent out a SOS for more helpers for groups across the town.

Drivers for the Community Car Scheme are wanted to help people with mobility problems and anyone who wants to get behind the wheel of a minibus for regular and occasional journeys would be a great help.

Full training is given but minibus drivers must be over 25.

People with learning disabilities would benefit from more people volunteering to accompany them to college courses. Working as part of the Learning Leisure Link, such people would help boost the students' independence.

Mencap needs a volunteer to join their committee as Minutes Secretary with out of pocket expenses paid and the Stowmarket Volunteer Centre is looking for people, for about an our each week, to join their Befriending Scheme to visit those isolated at home.

Volunteers are also needed for a variety of tasks for the Credit Union Stowmarket and Mid Suffolk, a mutual savings and loan service controlled by its members.

The Contact Club, which meets in the town on Mondays and Wednesdays, presents opportunities for lonely people to meet others. The club needs a regular volunteer driver to help transport members to and from the club. Expenses paid.

For more information, please contact Maureen Withey, manager of the Stowmarket and District Volunteer Centre on 01449 612486.
