BRITAIN'S biggest port was closed today as strong winds buffeted the coast.
Officials at Felixstowe said weather forecasts indicated winds could be above the 45mph safe working limit until around 2pm.
Both rail and yard operations have been affected and for the safety of all port users access to operational areas was being restricted.
“Vehicles are being marshalled on site and will be processed through to operational areas as soon as it is safe to do so,” said a port spokesman.
Highways officials and police were preparing to put Operation Stack in place if the number of lorries built up - directing truckers to park up on the old A45 at Levington until the port reopens.
Truckers were being told there would be delays and they should consider re-scheduling their arrivals.
