A UNIVERSITY student described today how a night out in Ipswich ended with two of his friends lying in the street covered in blood.

Osman Elsheikh told a jury at Ipswich Crown Court that he had travelled to Ipswich from Portsmouth University with some friends to visit Yasir Mirghani who lived in Ipswich.

After meeting Mr Mirghani at the restaurant where he worked, the men had gone to the Sound Academy Nightclub, in Arcade Street, Ipswich.

As they left the club in the early hours of the morning, one of Mr Elsheikh's friends was approached by a man and there was an exchange of words between them.

The man had then called out to some of his friends and a group of between three and five people had come over.

Mr Elsheikh had tried to hold back one of the men who went for one of his friends and then noticed Mr Mirghani lying on the ground several feet away with a man holding a metal bar standing over him.

Mr Elsheikh had run over and kicked the man in the chin causing him to fall to the ground.

He then saw another of his friends lying on the ground bleeding from the head with a man walking round him in circles kicking him.

Mr Elsheikh had run over and restrained the man from kicking his friend.

He said that during the incident he also saw a man holding a champagne bottle.

After the incident he saw Mr Mirghani in a doorway with his head in his hands with blood coming from a wound on his forehead.

Before the court is 22-year-old Glodean O'Connor, of Norwich Road, Ipswich, who has denied violent disorder.

The trial continues.
