A YOUNG stonemason has proved he is a master craftsman.

Spencer Wix, 22, who works at F Masters of Woodbridge, won three first prizes in a national competition for stonemasons.

His original obelisk style memorial made of Portland stone caught the judges' eyes and it was so striking that he won first prize for the best design of the show.

Mr Wix also won first prizes for the best completed memorial and the best lettering at the Funeral Services Exhibition at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. He was given a fourth award when he came second in the carving or sculpture class.

The memorial included a sunflower head on the top and the hand cut lettering was run through with vine leaves.

Mr Wix, of Sparrows Croft Road, Rendlesham, said: ''It was a big shock to get the awards as there were some amazing pieces of work and now I would like to develop my artistic side on a one-to-one basis with customers and create something unique that will stand out from the rest.''

His leading subject at Farlingaye High School, Woodbridge, was art and Mr Wix joined the stonemasons after leaving school. He completed block release training with Bath College to achieve his craftsman status.

Ann Dempsey, manager of F Masters, said: ''We are all very proud of Spencer's achievements. He has a natural talent and ever since he joined us we have given him every opportunity to develop his skills.''
