A NEW club for gay people which offers them a place to go without feeling uncomfortable has proved to be a roaring success.

Club Essence has been set up in Bury St Edmunds to cater for the large numbers of gay men and women in Suffolk.

Organiser Sherrie Russell said: "In rural communities some people don't think there are any gay people. But there is a desperate need for a club like this, as before people had to travel to either Ipswich or Cambridge.

"Gay people had no where to go without being laughed at and penalised for being gay.

"I was surprised how many gay people there are in Bury. But straight people are welcome too.

"Our aim is to mix straight and gay people so everyone is comfortable together," she added.

Having started with just 10 members, in October, the club now has around 80 members with some coming from as far afield as Essex.

Club Essence meet every Monday night at Karooze bar, in St Andrews Street, and anyone interested should just go along.
