A man accused of raping and sexually assaulting a teenager in Sudbury has been remanded in custody following his first appearance in court.

Marian Pavel, 28, of Cavendish Way, Sudbury, was arrested on Monday after an 18-year-old woman reported being raped near an area of grassland, between First Avenue and Second Avenue, at about 3.30am on bank holiday Monday, May 28.

Pavel appeared before magistrates in Ipswich on Wednesday, via video link from Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre, charged with rape and sexual assault.

Prosecutor Colette Harper said the victim had been walking from the town centre when she was grabbed from behind and pushed to the ground, before being sexually assaulted and raped.

Solicitor Helen Korfanty gave no indication of plea and made no application for bail on behalf of Pavel, who was remanded in custody to appear at Ipswich Crown Court on July 4.
