FEARS of gale force winds ripping through Suffolk today have failed to materialise the Met Office has confirmed.

Weather warnings predicting early morning gusts of more than 65mph and possible damage were issued last night but strong winds have largely passed the county by.

A spokesman for the Met Office said inland areas of Suffolk had experienced blustery conditions with winds of between 25mph and 30mph but this will ease slightly during the day.

The winds will slow further into tomorrow morning although spells of wet weather are expected throughout the weekend.

The spokesman said that although inland areas have avoided high winds some coastal areas have experienced gusts of close to 60mph making sailing conditions difficult.

Drivers are being asked to take extra care because of the wind and be aware of the possibility of localised flooding on roads.
