A CHARITY for disabled children in Suffolk is celebrating 21 years of service.

Out & About in Ipswich was founded in 1984 and creates opportunities for children and young people with disabilities to enjoy everyday activities.

The organisation currently caters for 270 children across Suffolk and Norfolk and has doubled in size over the past five years.

Steve Allman, chief executive, said: “The organisation is all about helping disabled children take part in the same sort of activities as able bodied children, things such as cub, brownies, youth clubs and after school clubs.

“The important thing is it's all their own choice. They say what they want to do and we take it from there.

“The main thing is that they are having fun doing the same things other children are doing.

“In the last 21 years we have seen the organisation grow and we have seen huge leaps in the children we work with. Some of the children have made really good progress.

“We are proud at the amount of children we have helped over the years.”

As part of their 21st birthday celebrations, the organisation held a party with more than 150 volunteers, members of the board of trustees, staff and children.

The party was also a goodbye to David Renton who has left his post as chief executive after 15 years.

He was presented with a This Is Your Life red book containing the history of his involvement with the charity.

Mr Allman added: “David really made the charity what it is and we owe him quite a lot.”

Out & About is now attempting to raise £21,000 to mark its 21 years in operation.
