A SUFFOLK detective is to appear before Ipswich Crown Court charged with perjury following the collapse of a fraud trial which cost the public £3 million.

Detective Sergeant Kevin Hegarty was released on unconditional bail today at South East Ipswich Magistrates Court to return to Crown Court on November 1.

The case has been brought by Rome-based businessman Giovanni di Stefano.

He claims DS Hegarty committed perjury at a fraud case earlier this year. The businessman, who claims to have link with Saddam Hussain and Slobodan Milosevic, alleges DS Hegarty made a statement he knew to be false.
