VILLAGERS today reacted with shock after a Suffolk holiday maker plunged to his death from a balcony in Cyprus when a prank went tragically wrong.

Daniel Williams, from Battisford, near Stowmarket was trying to jump from one first floor balcony to another while joking with friends.

He died from head injuries at the scene after slipping and falling three metres to the ground in the holiday resort of Ayia Napa.

Today his family, friends and neighbours were still coming to terms with the horrifying news of 27-year-old Daniel's death which had sent shockwaves through the village.

His parents Linda and Gerard said they had been left shattered by the tragedy, which happened on the final night of Daniel's two-week holiday.

Mr Williams, 60, said: "We wish it would have been us. It's not like losing a parent. We have seen somebody's life right from a little baby and we could see he was going forward as he had so many ambitions.

"He was a determined character and if he set his mind on a task then he would try his best to do it and see it through. That could have cost him his life."

It is thought Daniel had had a T-shirt printed and was trying to put it on a friend's balcony as a surprise when the prank went tragically wrong.

Mr Williams added: "He had a wide cross section of friends from all walks of life. You could not find anyone with a bad word to say about him if you tried."

His best friend Matt Elliot, 26, of Ipswich, added: "I cannot fathom my life without Dan as he has always been there for me as we've known each other since we were five."

Hazel Gibbons who lives opposite the family and works with Daniel's mother described Daniel as a "nice lad" who used to play with her son Mark, 28.

"I have known him for a long while but less since he's been older. He left home - he went away with his work but came back with his work. I have always got on well with him and so did my son."

Daniel worked as a computer design technician for a firm based in Great Blakenham.

The accident happened at the Green Bungalows holiday apartments at 4.30 pm.

A police spokesman in Cyprus said: "His friends were in the apartment next to his and he attempted to jump over to their balcony as a joke.

"He fell from the first floor and as a result he suffered a bad injury to his head.

"A doctor from a nearby clinic attended immediately but he was declared dead at the scene."

There was no suspicion of foul play and an autopsy will be conducted today (MON) to ascertain whether Mr Williams had been drinking, the spokesman added.
