SUFFOLK motorists may have witnessed an on-duty Essex police officer being mown down as he tried to help a stranded driver.Traffic policeman Gary Veal was attending a broken down vehicle on the A12 Colchester bypass when he was struck by a passing car and killed.

Traffic policeman Gary Veal was attending a broken down vehicle on the A12 Colchester bypass when he was struck by a passing car and killed.

Although the policeman was wearing a reflective jacket, the driver of the gold coloured Honda Accent collided with the 36-year-old on the carriageway.

The accident happened at around 6.30pm on January 12 on the north bound carriageway.

Pc Veal died the following day. His funeral takes place tomorrow.

A man from Norwich driving the Honda was breath tested which proved negative. No independent witnesses have come forward.

Essex police are appealing to motorists who may have passed the scene on that night to come forward.
