Suffolk New College is preparing to open the doors to its new £400,000 Fabrication and Welding Centre.

The new centre includes ten welding bays complete with industry standard equipment and ‘virtual welding’ technology allowing students to practice the craft in a computer-simulated environment.

Ipswich MP Ben Gummer will be on hand to cut the red ribbon on Friday to officially open the facility.

The project has come together with help from Ransomes Jacobsen, the New Anglia Skills Deals Programme and Weldability Sif as part of the college’s push to boost its STEM offer, create more apprenticeships and reduce unemployment.

The new centre looks to reduce the challenge businesses in the engineering and manufacturing sector have faced recently in filling skilled staff vacancies due to the absence of a state-of the art training facility in Suffolk.

It will benefit students on a wide range of courses and learning programmes including body repair, motor vehicle and plumbing.
