Members of the public will today have the opportunity to voice their opinion over proposals to move the Suffolk police control room to Norfolk.

A meeting of the Norfolk and Suffolk Collaboration Panel is to begin at Suffolk Constabulary’s Martlesham headquarters this morning.

Although the public or staff affected will have a 30-minute slot if they wish to say anything, questions will not be taken due to time constraints.

The second part of the meeting will be held in private. This will include Suffolk’s chief constable Douglas Paxton and Norfolk’s temporary chief constable Simon Bailey presenting the business case for their joint proposals for consideration.

These will be made to the counties’ Police and Crime Commissioners, Tim Passmore for Suffolk and Stephen Bett in Norfolk.

The possible move of the Suffolk’s command and control centre to Wymondham or elsewhere in Norfolk would affect the jobs of 134 civilian staff based at Martlesham.

The terms of reference looking at the options for the future of the current two control rooms were set down as long ago as January last year.

The future options were narrowed down to four in September to assess their cost benefit.

The following month a report was produced recommending the implementation of steps towards a single command and control room.

The estimated cost saving by October next year is nearly £1.9million.

Although no decisions have been made it appears a Norfolk base is a strongly recommended option, as Suffolk has no back-up facility for emergencies making it cost-prohibitive.
