SUFFOLK: An investigation is under way today after a match was abandoned when a referee was allegedly spat in the face by a Sunday league football player.

The match between Chantry Old Boys and Playford, which are both in The DRM Ipswich Sunday Football League, took place at Chantry Park yesterday and was abandoned after 88 minutes following the incident.

The player involved, who plays for Chantry, has been suspended from all football and remains under investigation.

A statement on Suffolk FA website said: “Suffolk FA has today received reports alleging that on Sunday, April 1, a player deliberately spat at a match official causing the abandonment of a DMR Ipswich Sunday Football League match. The incident is currently under investigation and the player will remain under suspension from all football until such a time that these investigations are concluded.

“Suffolk FA will not tolerate any sort of assault on match officials or any other participant and is committed to working with leagues and clubs to eradicate such behaviour from the game. Suffolk FA is providing the match official with support at this difficult time.”

A spokesman for Chantry Old Boys was unavailable for comment.
