A inquest has heard how talented Philip Govier from Hoxne collided with another fielder as they both went for the ball during a game on May 25.
He died from head injuries at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, four days later. Norwich coroner William Armstrong praised Philip as a "promising and talented young cricketer."
Recording a verdict of misadventure, Mr Armstrong added: "This was a freak occurrence, the cruellest tragedy that such a talented youngster should have met his death doing what he loved best."
A post-mortem on Philip, 17, showed he died from head injuries which included an extensive fracture of the skull. It is understood his head struck the knee of the other fielder when they collided.
Philip was playing for Diss 2nd XI against another Norfolk side, Downham Market 2nd XI, when he was fatally injured.
